Douglas McBain’s Fabric Badge from the 1948 London Summer Olympic Games

For this week’s #FridayFranceOlympics, we wanted to showcase Douglas McBain’s fabric badge from the 1948 London Summer Olympic Games. The Games returned after 12 years due to World War II. These games were known as “The Austerity Games” due to the economic status after the war. Germany and Japan were not allowed to participate, and although the USSR were invited, they chose not to send any athletes. McBain was 1 of 7 Scottish players picked for the British Team, managed by Sir Matt Busby. This was Britain’s most successful Olympic Games as they reached the Semi-Finals and finished fourth.
