Tribute to Sandy Jardine
Sadly the Rangers and Scotland legend Sandy Jardine lost his battle with cancer and passed away on Thursday at the age of 65.
Born in Edinburgh, Sandy was a top class defender for the best part of 20 years and amassed over 1000 games at club level with Rangers and Hearts. He was Inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2006. At Rangers he won 3 League titles, 5 Scottish Cups, 5 League Cups and a European Cup Winners Cup. He was voted Scottish Player of the Year with Rangers in 1975 and won the award again in 1986 playing for Hearts. Sandy won 38 caps for Scotland and played in both the 1974 and 1978 World Cup Finals. He will be sorely missed not just by Rangers and Hearts fans but also by the whole of the Scottish Football family.
Richard McBrearty, Curator of the Scottish Football Museum…
“Like many other people I am deeply saddened to hear that Sandy Jardine has passed away. Sandy represented Rangers FC on the Scottish Football Heritage Network and had been an active member since the formative year of 2008. He was the only football legend in our membership, but he was, first and foremost, a football enthusiast, passionate about his club, keen to develop and promote its heritage and supportive of the ideas of other club representatives sitting around the table.
Not long after I first met him, he took me on a tour of Ibrox and his enthusiasm was inspiring – he knew every story behind every object on display and he was responsible for developing what was already a very impressive club collection. The Rangers FC Hall of Fame and the Scottish Football Hall of Fame will continue to remind everyone of Sandy’s exceptional contribution to football as a top class player – on a personal note I will forever remember Sandy as a person full of warmth and humour who always found time to provide support and advice.”
